The Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology, founded in 1908 by Benjamin Franklin, is a testimony to his foresight. The city of Boston gave £1,000 in his 1789 bequest to establish a technical school, which opened in 1908.
The institute has since expanded its facilities with the help of industrialist Andrew Carnegie and land donated by the city. In 2019, the institute announced plans to sell its three-building 1908 campus and look for a 30% larger facility.
In September 2019, the institute moved to a new campus in Roxbury, with an 85,000-square-foot (7,900 m) building expected to open in autumn 2024.
In September 2020, The Boston Globe leaked information about a possible merger with Wentworth Institute of Technology, which faced opposition from community members and city officials. In November 2020, the board of trustees voted to keep the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology independent and to quash any merger talks.
In February 2022, the college received a $12.5 million gift from the Cummings Foundation to create technical career pathways for underrepresented post-secondary students.
In recognition of its transformative commitment, the college was renamed the Benjamin Franklin Cummings Institute of Technology.
