Family Overview
Josiah Franklin, born on December 23, 1657, in Ecton, Northamptonshire, England, was a tallow chandler, soaper, and candlemaker to Thomas Franklin and Jane White.
Benjamin Franklin, along with his father, four grandparents, and seventeen children, was born in England. He married Anne Child in 1677 and emigrated to Boston in 1683, having three children before and four after emigration.
Josiah Franklin married Abiah Folger on July 9, 1689, and had ten children with her. Benjamin, their eighth child, was Josiah Franklin’s fifteenth overall child and tenth and final son.
Abiah Franklin’s mother was born on August 15, 1667, in Nantucket, Massachusetts Bay Colony, to Peter Folger and Mary Morrell Folger.
Mary Folger, a Puritan from Massachusetts, fled to Boston in 1635 after King Charles I began persecution of Puritans.
Peter, a rebel destined to transform colonial America, was jailed for disobeying a magistrate to defend middle-class shopkeepers and artisans in conflict with wealthy landowners.

Deborah Read and Franklin married on September 1, 1729, after Franklin lived with the Read family before sailing to England. Franklin had already married another woman upon her return.
The couple’s marriage was a mixed affair, with Deborah accepting Franklin’s illegitimate son William as her own. Over time, she spent most of her time alone, as Franklin spent much of his time traveling.
Benjamin Franklin, a successful printer, publisher, and writer, was appointed the first postmaster of Philadelphia in the late 1750s. He was heavily involved in social and political affairs, leading to the establishment of the United States. Franklin embarked on numerous trips to Europe, but his wife, Read, refused due to fear of ocean travel. Despite her limited education, Read managed her husband’s businesses, maintained their home, cared for their children, and attended Quaker meetings.
Franklin, despite completing his diplomatic duties, did not return to Philadelphia due to his wife’s condition. In November 1769, Read informed Franklin that her stroke, declining health, and depressed mental state were due to her dissatisfied distress due to his prolonged absence. Franklin continued writing to Read, with his final surviving letter dated October 29, 1773.
After a brief period, Read stopped communicating with her husband, Franklin continued to write to her, but she did not return home. On December 14, 1774, Read suffered a stroke and died on December 19.
